The reconstruction of historical development of ideas about eutrophication and trophic status of water bodies may help resolving the issue of criteria for categorizing the types of reservoirs. In the 1910s, M. P. Somov attempted to develop a unified theoretical framework for classifying reservoirs in his book, “Fundamentals of Fishery Valuation of Lakes,” published in 1920. This is an important source that summarizes the early developments and ideas concerned with reservoir productivity. It was published when the well-known doctrine of lake typology by E. Naumann was still being developed. Somov’s approach to evaluating lakes as farmlands was based on the following ideas. First, regarding plankton abundance as an indicator of reservoir productivity. Second, understanding the need for chemical analysis of both the water and the plankton for better understanding of the ecosystem. Third, taking into account the characteristics of a water body such as its depth, location, and climatic conditions including temperature, precipitation, and wind patterns. Fourth, Somov believed that the main objective of reservoir valuation (“taxation”) was assessing the favorability of conditions for fish in a particular water body. Defining a lake description program, he believed that each lake ought to be considered as a system where all elements are interdependent. Somov’s review clearly demonstrates that the idea of “trophy” (productivity) in hydrobiology, expressed in his book (although the term “trophy” has not been used in it), has matured by the 1920s. This idea reflects the principle of minimalism and the unity of all the biocenoses in a reservoir.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>Задачи, стоящие перед современной экологической наукой, включают в себя и создание классификации экосистем водоемов по трофическому принципу, т. е. по уровню продуктивности. Реконструкция исторического пути, по которому шло формирование представлений об эвтрофировании и трофическом статусе водоемов, могла бы способствовать разрешению вопроса о критериях выделения типов водоемов. Одна из попыток разработки единой теоретической основы классификации водоемов была предпринята в 1910-е гг. М. П. Сомовым, который изложил результаты своей работы в книге «Основы рыбоводной таксации озерных угодий», вышедшей в 1920 г. Этот труд представляет несомненный интерес как источник, в котором подведены итоги начальных разработок и идей в отношении продуктивности водоемов. Во время его создания еще не было разработано широко известное ныне учение о типологии озер Э. Науманна. Основными идеями, из которых Сомов исходил в выработке подходов к оценке озера как сельхозугоды, были следующие. Во-первых, отношение к планктону как к объекту, по количеству которого в водоеме можно судить о производительности последнего. Во-вторых, понимание необходимости химического исследования как воды, так и самого планктона. В-третьих, Сомов предполагал, что нужно учитывать глубину и другие особенности водоема, а также его местонахождение, включая климатические характеристики местности. При этом он уделяет внимание не только температуре, но осадкам и ветрам. В-четвертых, основной задачей таксации он считал определение степени благоприятности условий для жизни рыбы в конкретном водоеме. При составлении программы описания озера Сомов полагал, что озеро во всех случаях нужно рассматривать как индивидуум, все части которого взаимосвязаны друг с другом. Обзор Сомова ярко демонстрирует окончательное созревание в гидробиологии к концу 1910-х гг. идеи трофности (в случае с анализируемой книгой без употребления данного термина), которая является выражением принципа минимума и отображает целостность ряда надорганизменных уровней жизни (биоценоз и экосистема).</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>M.
