Commenting on the chapter from the New Chronicle of the late 1620s, the greatest work of the official chronicle writing created under “the first Romanov”, which is concerned with the repercussions of the Crimean Tatar khan Gazi-Giray’s raid on Moscow, the author proves that this chapter mirrors both speculation, widely spread in the southern districts of Russia shortly after the Tatars’ hasty retreat, and evidence from state records.
