The journal publishes fundamental research in all areas of ecology in its classical understanding, implying the science of how organisms relate to one another and to their environment. The scope covers all issues of autecology, demecology, and synecology; biodiversity research, including macroecology; biogeochemical cycles; the structure, function, dynamics and sustainability of populations, communities, and ecosystems; ecological toxicology; radioecology; anthropogenic impacts on biota, and evolutionary ecology. Priority is given to innovative studies developing new concepts in ecology or contributing to a deeper understanding of environmental phenomena through the testing of explicitly formulated hypotheses derived from classical ecological theory. Regardless of the quality of manuscripts, the studies from related disciplines (botany, zoology, mycology, microbiology, soil science, forest science, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, toxicology, geography, geophysics, etc.) are only considered if they emphasize general ecological issues. The studies devoted to agricultural, medical, legal, technical, economic, sanitary-hygienic and socio-political issues, as well as those of applied or narrow regional interest are not accepted.

The journal considers original research and review articles, short communications, theoretical and methodological papers.
