HYMNOGRAPHIC WORKS BY DIMITRY OF ROSTOV (ISSUES OF ATTRIBUTION)
Abstract
The article examines the hymnographic works of the Metropolitan Dimitry of Rostov: Service for the Nine Holy Martyrs of Kizia, services for Gury of Kazan, troparion, kontakion and prayer to Cornely the Silent, Lamentation at the Entombnemt of Christ. The author of the article specifies the attribution of these compositions, the time of their creation, and outlines the features of the genre.

N. K. GUDZIJ AT THE STATE ACADEMY OF ART SCIENCES: THE HISTORY OF COOPERATION. PART 1: MAY 7, 1923 — MAY 28, 1924
Abstract
The publication, based on the data from the archival fund of the State Academy of Art Sciences (RGALI) and the personal archive of N. K. Gudzij (Department of Manuscripts, Russian State Library), traces the history of the work of a literary historian, textual critic, professor at a legendary academic institution with a rich and tragic history, and introduces unpublished texts of the scholar’s reports, as well as the feedback of his colleagues provided during the debates. The texts and documents reflect the various forms of Gudzij’s involvement in the work of GAKHN and the problem-thematic diversity of his speeches and studies, produced as a part of his work at the Academy (1922–1929).

THE FALL OF JERUSALEM AND THE TALE OF THE CAPTURE OF KYIV IN 1240: LITERATURE AND HISTORY
Abstract
The Tale of the Galician-Volhynian chronicle about the capture of Kyiv by Batu in 1240, with its detailed descriptions, has attracted historians for centuries, firmly occupying the niche of the main source for the reconstruction of the event. In parallel, many details of the Tale were proved to be based on the borrowings from the Byzantine literature. The goal of the article is to show that the identified features of the work of the Old Russian chronicler were prompted by the significance of Kyiv for his contemporaries as the sacred center of the «Russian land», and the literary parallels of the Tale do not seem to deprive it of its properties of a historical source.

«STAND IN SPLENDOR OF YOUR GLORY, PETROZAVODSK!»: POEMS OF T. V. BALANDIN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE RUSSIAN POETIC TRADITION OF THE 18TH CENTURY
Abstract
The article deals with the way classical literary masterpieces are perceived by a provincial amateur poet. The research is based on the poems by the local history expert Tikhon Balandin (circa 1748-1830) from Petrozavodsk. The possible sources of Balandin’s poetry are outlined. The author suggests that the basis for the images and meter of Balandin’s poems are syllabic-accentual odes by M. V. Lomonosov and the works of the poets of the 17th century where the pre-syllabic principle of versification was used.

A. S. PUSHKIN’S CRITICAL NOTES FOR THE FIRST ISSUES OF LITERATURNAYA GAZETA (TOWARDS THE PROBLEM OF DATING)
Abstract
The autographs of many of Pushkin’s critical notes published in Literaturnaya Gazeta have not been preserved, and those that are available are mainly derived from the so-called First Arzrum Notebook. A number of perceptive observations concerning the dating of these articles were made by Ya. L. Levkovich, who prepared the description of this notebook. However, a more subtle look at the content of the notes and the exact time of publication, has helped us to further clarify their dating.

«ETERNAL DARKNESS» BY SEBASTIAN BACH: ATONEMENT OR PUNISHMENT? (CONCERNING THE ORIGINS OF THE IDEA OF V. F. ODOEVSKY’S NOVELLA SEBASTIAN BACH)
Abstract
The article reinterprets the main idea of V. F. Odoevsky’s novella Sebastian Bach, the final one in the cycle House of Madmen, a project the writer worked on during the 1830s. Later, the stories from this cycle were incorporated into the novel Russian Nights. As a part of the new project, they were edited by the author to meet his current goals. This later edition is generally used by researchers when analyzing the stories about the «genius madmen». The purpose of the article is to return to the author’s original idea and offer a new rendition of the image of Sebastian Bach, as based on the early text (1835).

ALMANAC IN THE TIME OF JOURNALS: DAGUERREOTYPE (1842) BY N. V. KUKOLNIK
Abstract
The article deals with an obscure almanac Daguerreotype (1842) by Nestor Kukolnik. His publishing strategy is reconstructed through the analysis of the contents of the almanac and the features of its publication, as well as through the examination of Kukolnik’s diaries, introduced into scientific circulation for the first time; based on several critical reviews of the Daguerreotype, conclusions regarding the place of the almanac in the literary field of the 1840s are drawn.

Abstract
The article outlines the contribution of the French writer and literary critic from the influential Parisian magazine Revue des Deux Mondes Hippolyte Delaveau (1808–1862) to the popularization of Russian literature in France, as well as to the orchestration of the image of Russia and Russians in the French cultural consciousness of the 19th century.

ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF THE IMAGE OF THE WOLF-NIHILIST IN I. A. GONCHAROV’S NOVEL THE PRECIPICE
Abstract
The article deals with the main formation sources of the allegorical image of the wolf-nihilist Mark Volokhov in the novel The Precipice by I. A. Goncharov. Citing the correspondence between L. N. Maykov and his university comrades, we can assume that, apart from the mythopoetic, literary-philosophical and typological reasons, Mark can be likened to a predator due to certain biographical prerequisites.

THE IMAGE OF THE DEACON IN THE RUSSIAN LITERATURE OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY — EARLY 20TH CENTURY, AS ASSESSED BY THE CLERICAL JOURNALISM
Abstract
The article examines the works of the writers of the 19-20th centuries, where various types of deacons are represented, assessed either as positive or as negative types by the clerical criticism. The images of the deacons did not reflect the sophisticated reality of clerical practices. Still, literary works familiarized the wider readership with these practices. Clerical critics analyzed the respective works from the religious and moral point of view, and modern literary scholars do not always fully take this into account.

I. S. TURGENEV’S UNKNOWN TRANSLATION: «SOMOFF’S CASE» IN THE EUROPEAN AND RUSSIAN PRESS IN 1879
Abstract
A century ago, A. I. Beletski, a young Soviet scholar from Kharkov, published a couple of I. S. Turgenev’s letters to E. Ja. Kolbasin of 5 (17) and 9 (21) August 1879. The letters suggest that Turgenev received a certain «correspondence» from his long-time friend. The message excited Turgenev so much that he immediately decided to translate it into French and have it published in a prominent Parisian newspaper. What was the «correspondence» in question? There is no definite answer to the question. The present article seeks to identify the missing link in this story, examining the French and Russian press of 1879.

A. A. IZMAILOV AND H. H. YASINSKY: AN EPISTOLARY DIALOGUE
Abstract
The article discusses the main topics, personalities and events touched upon in the long-term epistolary dialogue between Alexander Alekseevich Izmailov (1873-1921) and Hieronymus Hieronymovich Yasinsky (1850-1931), whose names are extremely significant for the history of the Russian literature and journalism of the late 19th — early 20th century. Apart from highlighting the nuances of their relationship and clarifying certain instances of their life stories, the correspondence between the two writers describes the literary field as a whole, since Izmailov and Yasinsky determined the policies of the major popular editions and were instrumental in shaping the literary reputations of the writers of various trends in 1890s—1910s.

RESOLVING A TEXTOLOGICAL CASUS (AN UNKNOWN LETTER FROM A. A. BLOK TO D. N. FRIEDBERG)
Abstract
The article traces the textual history of A. A. Blok’s poetic sketch «Rejoicing and Spinning.», which was previously erroneously treated as a completed work. The final argument in resolving the issue is the previously unknown letter from A. A. Blok to D. N. Friedberg, discovered in the V. N. Orlov Foundation at RGALI, which is being introduced into the academic circulation for the first time. The circumstances of the two Symbolist poets’ cooperation in V. A. Ternavtsev’s educational and enlightenment project, the publication of textbooks for the primary classes of the «folk schools», are revealed. The analysis of the microtext — the notes and marginalia adjacent to the sketch — is instrumental for tracing the influence of V. Bryusov’s folklore stylizations on Blok’s early experiments with the form of «childish» or «naive» poetry.

THE RED LAUGH OF TSAR HUNGER:MIGRATION AND TRANSFORMATION OF ARTISTIC IMAGES IN THE WORKS OF L. N. ANDREYEV OF THE 1900s
Abstract
The article examines the avenues of migration and specifics of transformation of artistic images in the works of L. N. Andreyev. The study shows how the images created during the work on the story The Red Laugh and the play To the Stars are reinterpreted in the play Tsar Hunger. Early editions and final versions of the texts are used in the analysis.

AROUND THE BOOK POSOLON’: «THE DARK NIGHT» FAIRY TALE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE PETERSBURG ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN A. M. REMIZOV AND M. V. SABASHNIKOVA
Abstract
Dealing with the mythmaking problem in Russian Symbolism, the article analyses transferring of the images and motifs of the novel The Dark Night from the book Posolon’ (1907) by A. M. Remizov into the realities of the most famous locus of Symbolist culture, Vyach. Ivanov’s The Tower. The author deciphers its latent meanings and offers a new reading of the Remizov’s tale as a work that attempts to replicate the mythological folk mentality. The additional meanings are derived from Remizov’s rare autographs, in the subtext of which there is an episode associated with M. V. Sabashnikova. The true story from the literary life of the Symbolist circle helps to fill the gaps in the biographies of the two personalities, and reflects the significant literary and cultural phenomena of the early 20th century.

V. P. SVENTSITSKY’S LETTERS TO D. S. MEREZHKOVSKY AND Z. N. GIPPIUS
Abstract
The publication introduces epistolary documents from the Merezhkovsky archive, stored at the Center of Russian Culture in Amherst (USA). It includes three letters from V. P. Sventsitsky, one of the founders and ideologists of the Christian Brotherhood of Struggle (1905-1908), to D. S. Merezhkovsky and one to Z. N. Gippius. The letters date back to 1907, being a fragment of a two-way correspondence that has not been preserved. They offer a new insight the history of personal relationships of the correspondents who took radical, but dissimilar positions in the religious and social movement of 1905-1908.

A GLIMPSE OF THE HISTORY OF THE LITERARY DISPUTES OF 1907-1908: THE RUSSIAN ARTIST MAGAZINE
Abstract
In the years 1907-1908, against the background of the confrontation between the leading Symbolist periodicals and the writers’ disputes in Moscow and St. Petersburg regarding the «mystical Anarchism», the poets consolidated around the Vesy (Libra) magazine (Yu. Baltrusaitis, Andrei Bely, V. Hoffmann, A. Kursinsky, M. Likiardopulo, Ellis); they were looking for alternative publishing solutions that would incorporate related creative spheres. The article deals with the history of their collaboration with the magazine Russkii Artist (The Russian Artist), edited by P. N. Mamontov.

E. ROSTAND AND THE ROMANTICISM IN THE WORKS OF M. I. TSVETAEVA
Abstract
The article examines the «Rostand layer» in the fictional and ego-documentary works of M. I. Tsvetaeva. Rostand’s work became one of the main sources that informed Tsvetaeva’s concept of Romanticism, which she perceived as a facet of her own soul, rather than as a literary phenomenon. Analyzing the motives, images, plot twists of Rostand, Tsvetaeva shows that it was a comprehensive influence that affected her throughout her life and was not limited to a purely «literary» sphere.

I. E. BABEL’S STORIES MY FIRST FEE AND THE REFERENCE: THE HISTORY OF THE TEXT
Abstract
The article deals with I. Babel’s stories My First Fee and The Reference as the two equally important texts featuring the same plot; neither of them was published in the author’s lifetime. It turns out that The Reference was created later than My First Fee. This, in particular, is confirmed by the author’s dating of the texts of the stories. The earliest source of the story The Reference, a typescript entitled My First Fee, is published here as the appendix and thus introduced into the academic circulation.

Abstract
The paper offers a pioneering outline of the life circumstances of a poet N. A. Tyuvelev, who, in fact, was the only follower of D. Kharms. Until now, the name of Tyuvelev has remained in obscurity. The article provides archival data from Tyuvelev’s student file, as well as information on his military experiences during the war.

THE CHINESE FATE OF B. L. PASTERNAK’S LEGACY (RECEPTION AND TRANSLATIONS)
Abstract
The article details the background of translation and perception of B. Pasternak’s legacy in China. The translation of B. Pasternak’s works can be divided into three stages: limited circulation of the translations before 1980s, when B. Pasternak gave a narrow circle of Chinese youth a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the outside world; official translations and publications of his works in the last 20 years of the 20th century, when B. Pasternak, and especially his novel Doctor Zhivago, were read throughout the country; B. Pasternak as a modern classic in the new century, with his poems being translated and reinterpreted by the modern Chinese poets. The work of B. Pasternak is also analyzed in the context of the self-development of the Chinese writers and poets.

WHY IS IT WRONG TO FOLLOW IN SOMEONE’S FOOTSTEPS? (ON THE LITERARY CONTEXT OF I. A. GONCHAROV’S AN UNCOMMON STORY)
Abstract
In An Uncommon Story, I. A. Goncharov uses a number of concepts in order to interpret the issues related to literary property and unsolicited borrowings: imitation, parallel, borrowing, theft. His key metaphor, however, is the one that goes back to Horace, to follow in someone’s footsteps, and it allows the writer to distinguish between the concepts of plagiarism and forgery (contrefaçon), as well as to formulate his ideas about the limits of copyright.
